Every Monday I get a notification on my phone which tells me how much screen time I have had the previous week. Today I was glad it was down but it is still an average of 2 hours 16 minutes per day. I looked into this further and was totally shocked to find I spent a total of 4 hours and 50 minutes on Facebook last week!
Apart from wishing a few people happy birthday and liking friends posts of dog walks, holidays and days out this also consisted of:
I ask myself what value has this added to my life?
Maybe a quick 10 minutes per day to check in to wish someone I like happy birthday or find out where my running group is meeting is necessary but certainly not nearly 5 hours of my time in a week!!
I know I just do this as a habit and I actually know it is not adding any value to my life but I keep doing it anyway. Taking a step back every now and again to question the things we do every day is always helpful. Unfortunately, we don’t always have a phone to highlight the problem and get us to notice we need to change.
Coaching can be a great way of helping us to identify the things we do day-to-day which take up lots of our time and energy but actually add very little value. I offer workplace coaching to help individuals:
It is amazing to see someone make changes they never thought they would and for them to tell me that coaching played a big part in those actions.

Apart from wishing a few people happy birthday and liking friends posts of dog walks, holidays and days out this also consisted of:
- Looking at things people are selling (generally a lot of rubbish!)
- Looking at photos of jewellery and bags I can’t afford
- Reading news about people I don’t know
- Looking at friend suggestions of people who are not my friends
- Watching videos on life hacks – how to fold clothes, how to plumb in a washing machine, how to save space in my freezer (OMG Make is stop!)
I ask myself what value has this added to my life?

- Set goals that will really make a difference to their work life
- Work out what is going on just now and what needs to change
- Come up with a plan of the actions necessary to make the change
- Understand what may hold a person back in taking the action
- Hold them accountable for what they said they would do
