During my 8 hour flight to Florida this year I had lots of time on my hands! I noted that one of the striking things about a certain airline was the red skirt, red lipstick and red shoes that the air hostesses were wearing. After we landed, my son was invited to meet the pilot who was equally as smart in his uniform. It got me to thinking about the impact that uniforms have on people at work.
For the customer the uniform is part of the brand and helps us build an image of the company. It also allows us to identify who is a member of staff and who is another passenger. For me as a nervous flyer it helps to keep me calm – which his crazy I know! But if the air hostess is calm and looking smart, I am feeling more relaxed.
However, for the employee I wondered about the impact of the uniform on them. I am guessing it helps build team spirit, it may build a strong sense of connection to the company and may help them get into “work mode” as soon as they put it on.
When I booked this holiday, I did it on a video call with a very smart woman – in red jacket, perfect hair and make-up and a Teams background of a plane taking off. As the conversation when on she told me she was in her back bedroom as she was working from home. I found this quite funny!
This got me to thinking about what we should wear now that lots of us work from home.
I definitely don’t miss work shoes and I imagine the sales of high heels may never recover! However, I wondered if our new working from home wardrobe could have an impact on our productivity? Is it good to get dressed up for work? Should we still have some clothes we deem to be for work and others for personal time to create that boundary?
I would love to know your thoughts!
